About

Described as "a rare breed... with an exciting lyricism in the sound..."*, Canadian tenor Jan van der Hooft is a multi-season alumnus of the Emerging Artist Program at Calgary Opera. Professional performance credits and responsibilities from this past 2018/2019 season include his main stage debut as ‘Tybalt’ in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, understudy duties as both 'Rob Hall’ in Joby Talbot's Everest and the iconic ‘Duke of Mantua’ in Verdi’s Rigoletto, and the role of 'The Nephew' in the world premier of Veronkia Krausas' critically acclaimed new work, Ghost Opera.

Esteemed for his "legato phrasing and clear diction", Jan has also been in demand as concert soloist with several organizations across the prairies and eastern Canada. These include the Ewashko Singers and Capella Antica (Ottawa/Montreal), Southern Manitoba Choral Society, the Professor Bach Project, and Polycoro (Winnipeg), as well as the Red Deer Symphony, Early Music Voices Calgary, and the Calgary Festival Chorus. Between 2011 and 2014, he was a core member of Winnipeg’s premier professional Baroque choir Canzona, where notable performances included the role of the Evangelist in Bach’s St. John Passion, and tenor soloist in both Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and Zelenka's Mass in C minor, under the baton of celebrated conductor, Dr. Henry Engbrecht.
